The National Smart Grid Mission (NSGM) was established by the Government of India under the Ministry of Power (MoP) on March 27, 2015, to accelerate the deployment of Smart Grid technology across the country. Operational since January 2016, NSGM operates with dedicated resources, financial autonomy, and strategic authority to implement and monitor Smart Grid policies and programs.

One of the pioneering projects under NSGM was executed by Ajmer Vidyut Vitran Nigam Ltd. (AVVNL), Rajasthan. This pilot project successfully showcased the benefits of Smart Grid functionalities, particularly in Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) for automated energy audits and loss reduction analytics. The case study conducted for 1,000 consumers on a single feeder over a six-month period (October 2016 – March 2017) revealed significant improvements:

Customer Benefits:

  • Accurate billing, real-time consumption tracking, and outage notifications via mobile app
  • 20% reduction in outage time, enhancing service reliability
  • 50% reduction in meter failure rate and 30% reduction in transformer failure rate

DISCOM & Operational Benefits:

  • Automated meter reading & billing cycle reduction from 14 days to 5 days
  • Automatic DT-wise energy audit for identifying high-loss areas
  • AT&C loss reduction from 20% to 13.5%

Smart Meter Deployment in India (March 2025 Status):

  • 2,29,29,954 smart meters successfully deployed
  • Total sanctioned & awarded smart meters: 22,23,54,490
  • Total awarded & installed smart meters: 13,80,22,912

The smart meter revolution is playing a pivotal role in enhancing grid efficiency, reducing losses, and optimizing energy consumption. As India continues its Smart Grid transformation, strategic investments and regulatory frameworks will drive sustainable energy management and consumer-centric power distribution.
