New Delhi, March 13, 2025 – India’s smart meter installation drive continues to gain momentum, with 22.9 million meters installed as of March 12, 2025. This milestone is part of the broader initiative under the Smart Meter National Programme (SMNP), aiming to revolutionize energy management in the country.
The Government of India has committed INR 23,000 crores in gross budgetary support to install 250 million prepaid smart meters by 2027. State governments are also making significant progress, with 40 million meters sanctioned in the eastern region alone. Of these, 19 million have been awarded, and 6 million have already been installed.
