India Accelerates Smart Meter Installation: 22.9 Million Installed by March 2025

New Delhi, March 13, 2025 – India’s smart meter installation drive continues to gain momentum, with 22.9 million meters installed as of March 12, 2025. This milestone is part of the broader initiative under the Smart Meter National Programme (SMNP), aiming to revolutionize energy management in the country.

Government Initiatives and Investments

The Government of India has committed INR 23,000 crores in gross budgetary support to install 250 million prepaid smart meters by 2027. State governments are also making significant progress, with 40 million meters sanctioned in the eastern region alone. Of these, 19 million have been awarded, and 6 million have already been installed.

The smart metering sector is witnessing substantial corporate activity and investment:

  • Company-Wise Installation Updates

    • IntelliSmart installed 66,000 smart meters in December 2024.
    • Adani Transmission added 7,973 smart meters in the same period.
  • Mergers & Acquisitions

    • Kaynes Technology, a Mysore-based electronics manufacturer, acquired 100% stake in Iskraemeco India for USD 5.13 million.
  • Major Investments

    • SAT Private Limited secured USD 2.5 million for smart meter technology.
    • Adani Group announced plans to invest INR 21 billion in smart metering solutions.
    • Iskraemeco has committed INR 1,000 crores to develop an integrated hardware and software facility for smart meters.
  • Funding and New Contracts

    • Delhi-based startup Kimbal Technologies secured USD 5 million from Niveshaay for smart meter solutions.
    • CyanConnode, a UK-based smart mesh network provider, won a contract to supply 6.5 million communication modules for smart metering in India.

Future Outlook: A $20 Billion Market Opportunity

With India targeting 250 million smart meters by 2027, the smart metering sector presents a $20 billion opportunity in energy management. The initiative, driven under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), is set to enhance power distribution efficiency nationwide.
