Solar Parks Development Status in India

1. Solar Park Capacity Development

The Scheme for “Development of Solar Parks and Ultra Mega Solar Power Projects” was rolled out in December 2014. Till Feb 2025, Ministry has approved 55 solar parks across 13 states with a capacity 39958 MW. GoI targets to commission this capacity by March 2026. Of the approved capacity, an aggregate capacity of 12306 MW of solar projects has been commissioned till Dec 2024, out of which 1802 MW has been commissioned in the calendar year of 2024.


2. Government Announcements & Achievements

Central Government

CFA For Solar Park Development: Ministry provides Central Financial Assistance (CFA) of up to Rs. 25 lakh per solar park for preparation of Detailed Project Report (DPR). Beside this, CFA of up to Rs. 20.00 lakh per MW or 30% of the project cost, including Grid-connectivity cost, whichever is lower, is also provided on achieving the milestones prescribed in the scheme. The Solar Parks are developed in collaboration with the State Governments and their agencies, CPSUs, and private entrepreneurs.

State Government

Leading States for Solar Parks: As of 2023, the Indian government has approved 57 solar parks, with an aggregate capacity of 39,385 MW across 13 states. Rajasthan is a leader in India's renewable energy sector, particularly in solar power. As of 2024, as many as 10 solar parks have been identified in Rajasthan, with an aggregate capacity of 9,018 MW. Additionally, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh are also prominent in solar park development, each contributing significantly to the country's renewable energy capacity.

i. Player wise capacity buildup updates
  • In March 2025, Adani Green Energy commissions 250 MW solar power project in Andhra Pradesh
  • In April 2025, NTPC Green Energy Ltd has commissioned a 75 MW renewable energy capacity under Lot-4 of the IRCON Renewable Power Ltd.
ii. Merger & Acquisition
  • In Feb 2025, ONGPL (ONGC NTPC Green) signed a share purchase agreement to acquire a 100% equity stake in Ayana for US$ 2.3 Billion 
iii. Player wise key investment updates
  • ALTERRA will invest US$100 Million in the India-based renewable energy company Evren. The funds will be utilized to develop and construct upto 11 GW of solar , wind and BESS projects in Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh
iv. Funding Updates
  • In Feb 2025, ONGPL (ONGC NTPC Green) signed a share purchase agreement to acquire a 100% equity stake in Ayana for US$ 2.3 Billion

v. Auction updates
  • Uttar Pradesh New & Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA) is accepting bids to develop 110 MW of grid-connected PV power capacity across two solar parks in the Kanpur region of Uttar Pradesh on BOOM basis. The bids to be submitted by 27 May 2025.
  • MES, Eastern Command, Shillong zone invited bids to install rooftop solar systems with a total capacity of 1100 kW at Rangapahar Military Station in Nagaland. Bids must be submitted by May 22 2025.

4. Capacity Outlook

Upcoming capacity of solar parks 

The solar park scheme aims to generate approximately 40 GW of solar power capacity by the year 2029. 
As of December 2024, around 12.3 GW of this targeted capacity has already been successfully commissioned, Nearly 15 GW of the capacity is under tendering, while 13 GW is under construction.
