Ghana Rolls Out National Electric Mobility Roadmap to Drive Sustainable Transportation

Accra, Ghana  – The Government of Ghana has taken a bold step towards a cleaner, more sustainable future with the launch of the National Electric Mobility Roadmap, marking a significant milestone in the country’s journey toward widespread electric vehicle (EV) adoption.

As part of this transformative initiative, the government has set an ambitious target to ensure that 60% of its vehicle fleet is electric by 2035. The roadmap outlines a strategic approach to deploying EVs across the nation, beginning with the rollout of 1,000 electric buses and the establishment of the necessary charging and maintenance infrastructure.

First Phase Implementation (2024-2026): Laying the Foundation

The initial phase focuses on creating a strong regulatory and infrastructural foundation for EV adoption. Key measures include:
✅ Establishing a Climate Change Unit and regulatory framework
✅ Setting standards for charging infrastructure and integrating EVSE into building codes
✅ Implementing financial and non-financial incentives to encourage EV uptake
✅ Developing human capital and training programs for the EV value chain
✅ Strengthening Ghana’s power grid to support EV demand

Second Phase (2027-2035): Scaling EV Adoption

The second phase aims to drive widespread EV adoption, with a target of 35% EV penetration by 2035. This will be achieved through:
✅ Expanding government EV procurement (60% of the fleet by 2035)
✅ Encouraging investment in battery swapping stations and lithium-ion battery production
✅ Establishing EV charging points in public and private spaces
✅ Promoting local assembly of EVs to strengthen Ghana’s manufacturing sector

Final Phase (2036-2045): Full Transition to Electric Mobility

By 2045, Ghana aims to eliminate the import and sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles, making EVs the primary mode of transportation. This phase will also focus on:
✅ Strengthening EV assembly and battery production industries
✅ Phasing out incentives as EV adoption reaches mainstream levels
✅ Ensuring 100% of government fleet vehicles are electric by 2040

A Historic Milestone: Ghana’s First Electric Buses Hit the Road

In November 2024, Ghana made history with the commissioning of its first batch of electric buses under the Metro Mass Transit Limited. This milestone marks the beginning of a cleaner, more efficient public transportation system, setting the stage for a nationwide EV revolution.

The government is actively collaborating with industry stakeholders, international partners, and local businesses to drive this transition, ensuring economic growth, job creation, and environmental sustainability.
